Huawei is working on a low budget smartphone that runs Android and supports Near Field Communication, or NFC. The Huawei Sonic is the very first low price mobile phone that supports NFC and is therefore useful for making mobile payments using Google Wallet. Or an electronic key, if you want!
The Huawei Sonic runs on a Qualcomm MSM7227 processor that has the ARM11 architecture. It is clocked at a respectable 600MHz, which is about the clock speed you’d expect from a budget phone. The Huawei Sonic has a 3.5” capacitive touch screen that has a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels. The Sonic’s Android version is 2.3.3.
The Huawei Sonic’s specifications are, ofcourse, totally budget to midrange. But what sets this smartphone apart from all the rest, is that this is the very first phone in this price range that supports NFC. NFC will make it possible for this phone to be used to make mobile payments at a very short range.
Google’s Nexus S phone was the very first phone to support NFC. Surprisingly, the Nexus S hasn’t turned out to be a trend setter when it comes to NFC. Because most phones still do not support this technology.
Samsung, however, has made Galaxy S II smartphones that support NFC. The NFC version of the Galaxy S II does not appear in Europe.
Google is investing significant amounts of resources in getting NFC support in mobile phones off the ground. This is no surprise, because NFC plays a major part in their mobile payment technology. NFC has been around for a very long time already, but it has never made a big break. But it might still happen.
There are rumors going around the web about a new iPhone 5 with NFC. Nokia is also looking at the technology. They want to provide NFC support for all their new releases. Not that there are many new Nokia smartphones on the horizon, but that’s a whole different story!
The Huawei Sonic is slated for release in Spain for provider Yoigo and in Turky for provider Turkcell. Huawei has been known to release phones under big provider brand names.
The FCC has recently approved the smartphone. Like all phones, the Huawei Sonic had to be checked by the FCC for the amount of radiation that it gives off.
