Video Calls Likely To Be Introduced In Android 2.3.4

01 - video callsA Samsung employee has recently twittered a very interesting tweet! Based on this tweet, it seems very likely that video calls are finally going to become available on Android phones in the very near future. Star Trek, here we come!

The tweet can be read here. The Samsung employee states that he has had a video call using Gmail on his Nexus S, which was running Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 at the time. People have been looking forward to making video calls for quite some time now.

Many feel that it is about time that Android started supporting video calls. Google is not the first to introduce video calling. That honor went to Apple in June 2010, when they introduced FaceTime on the iPhone.

The new 2.3.4 version of Google’s Android operating system is very likely to be announced at the developer conference Google I/O 2011, which is going to be held in San Francisco next month.

The 2.3.4 version number suggests that only small updates will be made with regard to the current version number, which is 2.3.3. The video calling service is also said to be working on Honeycomb, the tablet version of Android.

Google has a history of announcing new Android versions on their developer conference. Last year, they announced Android 2.2 Froyo at Google I/O 2010. Back then, information had also been leaked up front. Presumable on purpose, to warm people up for the official announcement.
