While Google is (successfully) attempting to take over the world with Android, Microsoft is not exactly resting on its laurels. Not wanting to be upstaged by Google, Microsoft has partnered up with Facebook.
As Facebook is growing ever more larger and the web is going more social, we can clearly see Google trying to go a bit more social as well. Evidence of this is their +1 service, which is going to compete directly with Facebook’s Like button. It might even play a part in ranking websites. But that’s speculation.
Google wants to be more like Facebook. Facebook wants to be more like Google. Everybody wants to be more like everybody, because the mere thought of a competitor having a feature that you do not is completely unacceptable in the wondrous world of software and high tech gadgets.
Facebook & Bing
The WP7 Mango update is going to support Facebook chat on Windows Phone 7. From this, we can clearly conclude that there is going to be a very tight integration of Facebook and Bing into Microsoft’s WP7.
With relationships being less than friendly between Google and Facebook, I think it is fairly safe to assume that Google will not be getting access to Facebook’s treasure trove of real life user generated data.
However, Microsoft’s search engine Bing, however, most likely will! At the moment, Bing is still far less popular than Google. While Google’s market share is at an impressive 65%, Bing’s market share is only at around 14%.
However, Bing is still growing. And it’s growing more rapidly than Google at the moment. And thanks to the rich amounts of data that Bing will soon have access to, it might very well grow even faster in the near future.
It probably won’t overtake Google anytime soon. And Google might not even care, because so far… Bing’s growth has not been at the expense of Google’s search engine traffic.
Facebook, Bing & Wp7 Versus Google Android
Facebook already was a force to be reckoned with all on its own. Facebook, Bing and the Windows Phone 7 combined might very well create something that is worth more than the mere sum of its parts.
Google’s Android may be pretty awesome and it may be setting itself up to integrate itself with the world even more than it already has… but there will always be Facebook aficionados that are going to want to ultimate Facebook phone.
And as things are shaping up now, it looks like it’s going to be the Windows Phone 7!
A little competition never hurt anyone, though. ![]()
